Heath Ledger dies...

By now you have probably heard of the passing of the talented young actor Heath Ledger. As of this entry it appears as if drugs were involved but to what extent is still not known. What is interesting to me is the sleeping pills that appear to be present and Ledger's apparent insomnia, perhaps brought on by his role as The Joker in the latest Batman movie. I thought I would take a look at the trailer for the movie The Dark Knight and see if I got a hint of why Ledger found his role so demanding. While I am not a huge fan of the Batman series I must say that this entry looks to be extremely intense and Ledger's Joker seems to be particularly dark. Take a look at the trailer below and tell me if you can see how an actor could have trouble coming to grips with this role.

WISCONSIN HOMESTEAD CREDIT

By Julie Hilbert, Benefit Specialist Fond du Lac County

The Wisconsin Homestead Credit is a tax benefit for renters and homeowners with low or moderate incomes. It is designed to lessen the impact of rent and property taxes. Property taxes do not need to be paid before filing for Homestead Credit. Qualifying persons can get back some or all of their state taxes withheld during the year. Household income that is reported includes all income for tax purposes plus certain nontaxable income. Nontaxable income include gross Social Security, SSI, Railroad Retirement, pensions, IRA income and income from investments, etc. You have until April 15, 2012 to file for your 2007 homestead credit, and after April 16, 2008, you can receive credit back to 2004. The maximum amount of Homestead Credit can be as high as $1,160. Expect to wait six (6) to ten (10) weeks for the payment from the time it is submitted. To check up on payments you can visit the department’s website at www.dor.state.wi.us. Other assistance is available by calling the Madison office at 608-266-8641 or the Fond du Lac branch is open on Monday at 845 S. Main Street in Fond du Lac.

Things HAVE changed...

Last week Bob Nelson and I chatted with Sandy Bernier, coordinator of the Fond du Lac County Tobacco Control Coalition. We talked about a number of items including a statewide smoking ban and the toll free quit line. We also talked briefly about the lengths to which tobacco companies will go to find new smokers. However I am here to remind you how things used to be in the smoking ad game. Take a look at this ad from the the early 1960's. While we still have a way to go at least the Simpson's are not spokespersons for Camels.

Ducks Unlimited...

I had a chance to chat with Tom Langenhorst today regarding the annual DU banquet that will take place this year on Thursday Jan 31. As always I am amazed at all the planning that goes into making this one of the area's biggest nights. The event was started way back in 1973 ( that does not really seem that long ago) by some outstanding community leaders including the late Bill Brauer, a man I had the great privilege to know. There will be only 250 tickets sold to the event so you better purchase yours today. The prizes are amazing and there will be no shortage of good times had by all. If you would like to get your tickets you can call Tom Langenhorst at 921-0619 or Dave Kuen at 922-1601.

The world's cheapest man...

Today I was again joined by Jeff Yeager, otherwise known as "The Ultimate Cheapskate". He told a story about people trying to wrestle his title away from him. My first thought was that I have sat at a few barstools next to some of these people.

Anyway here is the link to Jeff's website. He will be doing a book tour on his bike and while there is no Wisconsin stop at this point there may be one in the future. If you would be interested in hosting Jeff in your home along his trip, please drop him a line.
