I Scream, You Scream, We all....

You know the rest. Today Brenda Gudex, Director of Agricultural Programs for The Fond du Lac Area Association of Commerce joined me and talked about Ice Cream. Among the items we touched on was a neat recipe for "Ice cream In a Bag". This seems like a fun activity to do with kids over the summer months. Here is the recipe:

1/2 cup whole milk or heavy cream

1 tbl sugar

1/2 tsp vanilla

Combine in a ziploc sandwich bag and close tightly

In a quart size ziploc bag place crushed ice and 1 tbl salt.

Place CLOSED milk bag inside ice bag.

Shake for 5-10 minutes until ice cream is formed.

Feel free to mix in some other flavors such as chocolate syrup or frozen strawberry's w/ some juice and see what happens.

We also talked about our favorite ice cream in the world...Babcock Hall Ice Cream from UW-Madison. All of the info you need should be found with the above link. You can also find a selection of their ice cream at the Memorial Union which, by the way, is my favorite place in the entire world to spend a nice summer afternoon and evening. Please take some time and spend a Friday or Saturday this summer in Madison you will not be sorry.

Mr Movie visits the Zoo...

Today I talked with Mr Movie and before we got to the new DVD releases we chatted about his visit to the Milwaukee County Zoo. This got me to thinking about how long it has been since I have been to the Milwaukee Zoo. I visit the Vilas Park Zoo in Madison every once in a while but it has been at least 12 years since Milwaukee has been blessed with my attendance. My wife Katie and I must make that trip this summer. Any hoo here are today's new releases.

mmmmm...Hamburgers...mmmmm

Today I chatted with George Motz whose new book is Hamburger America. He originally produced a documentery by the same name and now comes the book with 100 great burger joints. There are four Wisconsin stops included and here is some info on each.

Solly's Grille I have been to Solly's many times and I promise you their's is a burger unlike any other. I doubt that eating at Solly's on a weekly basis would be a good health choice but every now and then is a must. They also serve great french fries and shakes.

Dotty Dumpling's Dowry This joint has been through a few moves in recent years and has been written about many times across the country. While I have not been there in recent years I have enjoyed their burgers. However when in Madison my choice always has been and always will be our next stop...

THE PLAZA TAVERN I first had a Plaza cheesburger as a very little kid in the 60's. My grandmother lived across the street and whenever we stayed with her we would get to go across the street and get a bag of burgers. The sauce is world famous and their fries are very good as well (get a side of plaza sauce to dip the fries). This is a bar and at night was always a a favorite haunt of mine as a UW student. There is a very eclectic mix of patrons, however during lunch you are as apt to find a politician as a street person sitting at the bar with a beer and burger.

Wedl's Hamburger Stand & Ice Cream Parlor I must say I have never tried this place. perhaps this summer I will make a trip and get dinner at the Hamburger stand and take in a Drive In movie at one of Wisconsin's last drive in theaters.
