Sr. Moment notes...

Here is everything Julie Hilbert talked about last week.

Home Safety for Older Adults – Accidents at home are one of the leading causes of injury and death in the US. Older adults who live at home may need to make some adjustments in their home environment to accommodate the normal aging process. Older adults can protect against falls, fires and accidental poisoning by taking the following precautions:

Remove clutter from floors, stairs and traffic areas
Use floor coverings with slip resistant features and replace worn coverings
Install smoke and carbon monoxide detectors on each level of home
Dispose of outdated medications
Locate telephone near bed and on low surfaces in other areas of home
Use special bathroom devices: non-skid mats, grab bars, show chair and raised toilet seat.
Use exhaust fan or open window in kitchen to clear air of smoke and vapors
Do not smoke in bed or sleep with heating devices
Have chimney checked
Develop and practice an emergency exit plan

You can save a life acting F.A.S.T.
F = Face, Ask the person to smile. Does their mouth or eye droop?
A = Arm, Ask the person to raise both arms. Does one arm drift downwards?
S = Speech, Ask the person to repeat a simple phrase. Does their speech sound slurred or strange?
T = Time, If he or she has trouble with ANY ONE of these tasks call 911 immediately and describe symptoms to the dispatcher.
