SENIOR MOMENT UPDATE
Increase to Social Security for 2012 - The Social Security Administration has announced a 3.6% increase in the annual Cost of Living Adjustments, or COLAs, for Social Security beneficiaries in 2012. The COLA increase will take effect January 1 and is welcome news for beneficiaries who have not seen a cost of living increase since 2009. The 3.6% increase adds about $43 to the average retired worker’s Social Security check of $1,186. However, premium costs for Medicare Part B coverage are expected to rise, potentially by double-digits, eating away at much of this cost of living increase.
More good news! – Medicare Part B Premiums for 2012. People paying $96.40 will now pay $99.90 for next year an increase of $3.50. People that are currently paying either $110.50 or $115.40 will now pay $99.90 a DECREASE of either $15.50 or $10.60. So in 2012 everyone will be paying the $99.90 for Medicare Part B premiums. If you have higher income greater than $85,000 for a single or $170,000 for a couple the cost of the Medicare Part B and Medicare Part D premiums have increased for 2012. See Julie for further details.
Other changes – Medicare Part A deductible will increase to $1,156 and Medicare Part B deductible will decrease to $140.00.
